Ancient civilizations in India and Malaysia first came upon the usefulness of teak as building material, and since the 7th century, teak has been used in various construction projects throughout Asia. In Siam and Thailand it was employed to build temples and palaces, among other structures.

This specific wood was chosen primarily because it is an extremely tall species of deciduous tree which can grow upwards of 30 to 40 meters tall. Also, it is extremely durable, flexible and resistant to cracking, termites and weather, due largely in part to the natural oils it produces.

Despite its popularity in structural building, the most well-known use of teak has been in shipbuilding. Since the Middle Ages, teak has been the wood of choice for large ships not only because of its malleability and durability, but also because of some other peculiar features unique to the tree. Not only does teak withstand rust and rot, but when paired with metal it actually helps keep the metal itself from rusting as well.

When combined with destructive salt water, one can see why teak patio feature would be especially useful for patio furniture. Though not used as much in modern shipbuilding, teak has proven to be so long-lasting that old ship decks have been recycled into park benches throughout Europe, some of which are even over 100 years old.

It was not until the 19th century that teak came to be considered as an option for use in indoor and outdoor teak patio sets. The British can be credited with transporting the locally admired wood from its colonial Indian homeland to Victorian England. However, harvesting the wood did not prove to be an easy process. Because the trees are so heavy, logs will not float on water as many other kinds of woods do and are thusly transported via waterway.

Instead, the task then fell on native elephants who were trained to pull the logs through jungles and place them in stacked piles for ground transportation. So effective was this method that it is still in use today. In modern times, though still mainly found still in Asia, teak is also now grown in parts of Central and South America, whose growing conditions are comparable.

* Wood. Wood furniture requires different upkeep depending on the variety of wood and whether it has been finished or unfinished. Finished furniture can be cleaned using just mild detergent and water. But make sure to rinse off any soap to deter buildup. To protect wood from turning a dull gray color, use a sealant once to a few times a year.

Some woods, like teak, naturally create their own oil so less paint or sealer may be needed. In winter, if it is impossible to bring furniture into storage, the best route is to choose a strong tarp to cover exposed patio sets. Even the strongest hardwoods, though resistant to snow and stormy weather, last much longer when covered while not in use.

One thing to make sure is that wood furniture is dry before covering with a tarp, otherwise mold could form. Most tarps and covers are made from vinyl or plastic and come in neutral or green colors. They are also designed to tightly fit over commonly sized patio furniture, so there is less chance of them coming off or acquiring outside contaminants, including moisture.

* Metal. Most metal patio sets are now coated with rust-resistant finishes, but it does not hurt to invest a little time and elbow grease to keep it protected. On metal that is not textured, auto wax is a good way to keep the finish on metal furniture looking new. Aluminum is especially attractive in this sense because the frames will not rust. Steel, on the other hand, does not provide such a luxury, and must be monitored more carefully.

Any chips in the paint or rust to the frame must be sanded down and repainted to prevent further rusting. One thing common to most metal patio sets is the addition of weatherproof plastic cushions which are understandably much more comfortable to sit on than metal alone. The cushions also require some basic care.

Though waterproof, even cushions will succumb to weather, so it is a good idea to bring them inside on rainy days. If they do get stained, most cushions can be wiped off with a damp rag unless they suffer from serious water damage staining. Finally, metal patio sets, just like wood and any other material do best when shielded from bad weather. While archaeologists were excavating the remains of pharaohs, they came across the discovery of wicker that had been woven around 3000 BC. Ancient Egyptians had used reeds and swamp grasses to weave baskets, chests, chairs and even wig boxes out of the wicker material.

From its original popularity, wicker spread to the Roman Empire where the ruling classes looked favorably on the simple yet appealing new style. Eventually, the Romans began to exert their own influence over wicker designs and create unique variations.

After Rome, wicker spread across most parts of Europe. Once maritime trade routes had become well-established, wicker was then transported to the United Kingdom, Spain and Portugal where it was universally praised, despite a decline during the Dark Ages. As European explorers ventured further east, the discovery of rattan was made as an alternative to the traditional reed wicker.

Indeed, rattan proved to be much stronger than reed. By the nineteenth century, wicker patio sets were common fixtures in Victorian England households. Their simplicity and natural appearance was thought to be cleaner and thus more proper for both indoor and outdoor use.

While the first wicker furniture came to the Americas via the Mayflower, it was not until the mid-1800s that it became well known. Up until that time, rattan had been used for storing and affixing cargo. One entrepreneurial man by the name of Cyrus Wakefield, also known as the father of American wicker furniture, came across large quantities of rattan in a Boston shipyard and had an idea to start his own furniture company. And that’s just what he did.

Started out of his hometown, Wakefield began importing rattan and fabricating furniture pieces for sale to the public. Once his idea caught on, others followed suit, but Wakefield retained his edge in the business.

The Industrial Revolution of the mid-nineteenth century brought about yet more advances in the construction of wicker patio sets. Until then, all wicker had been hand-woven, which proved to be an arduous and time-consuming process. In the 1860s the Heywood Brothers (one of Wakefield’s competitors) commissioned an inventor to come up with an automated wicker weaving loom.

Not only did this breakthrough save time, but it also saved on labor and overall production costs. As the two competing companies vied for the top spot, prices fell and people could purchase wicker furniture for next to nothing. After a time, Heywood and Wakefield merged, thereby dominating the wicker industry until the 1920s.

Unfortunately, starting around that same time, the popularity of wicker began to wane, as consumers began opting for simple and geometric lines over the more elaborate look of wicker patio sets. Though Heywood and Wakefield attempted to redesign their products to suit public taste, it was not until designer Marshal B. Lloyd restored the popularity of wicker by using synthetic materials and opting for simplified designs, hence cutting costs and giving the people what they wanted anyway. Once again, Wakefield engulfed the competition by buying out Lloyd, but even the great threesome could not save wicker during the Great Depression.

Luckily for outdoor enthusiasts, wicker patio sets have once again grown in popularity over the last four decades. This increase falls in line with an overall demand for more variety of outdoor furniture. Who would have thought the wicker we know and love started its journey thousands of years ago, only to wind up looking fabulous on our decks.

When it comes to outdoor furniture, wicker patio sets are a popular choice. Of the types, wood wicker, made from predominantly bamboo, willow and rattan are the most common. Recently, the marketing of an all-weather synthetic resin wicker has revolutionized the market. However, much less is known about the short period of time when another material called paper fiber was the wicker of choice, or as the folks would say back then, the bee’s knees.

What is Paper Fiber?

The original name for this material was art fiber, or fiber reed, but these days it’s mostly known as creative twist, or simply paper fiber. Unlike original reed wicker, which dates back to ancient Egyptian times, the process of using paper fiber originated right here in the United States. In 1904 paper fiber was created out of manmade, chemically treated kraft paper that was twisted into a ropelike structure.

The reason paper fiber was invented was because in response to an embargo that was placed on oriental rattan coming in to the USA. Because it was now so inconvenient and prohibitively expensive to get a hold of rattan, manufacturers came up with paper. In addition, the switch to paper saved manpower and the tedious amount of time required to hand weave elaborate Victorian style furniture. The cheap new alternate material still managed to resemble expensive Victorian rattan imports, and thusly achieved incredibly popularity in wicker patio sets up through the 1930s.

Surprisingly, paper proved to be a versatile and malleable material, in addition to its low production costs. In practice, the base pulp is first treated with sizing and glue and then twisted into strands that resemble rattan. Because of its properties, paper was a good choice for wicker patio sets as it could be fashioned into many sizes and colors due to its porous nature and can easily be manipulated without having to soak the wicker as was the case with reed wicker.

As you can imagine, paper fiber quickly became stiff competition for traditional rattan furniture. Not only was it cheaper but it was easier to repaint than rattan. Once industrialization set in, all wicker became mass-produced, rather than woven by hand, which further heightened sales. The Lloyd Loom was created in 1917 to more quickly and efficiently weave products while lowering production and labor costs. Then, in the 1920s, a wire core was added to the fiber strands to reinforce them.

Paper fiber found another outlet beyond wicker patio sets. Wooden chair manufacturers used the new material, which was now available in sheets, as the seat bottoms of wood chairs. Consumers of paper fiber liked how it came in a continuous strand, so there was no need to worry about joining multiple pieces together. It also took well to varnish and lacquers. So common was its occurrence in pop culture that classrooms and social groups would engage in art fiber weaving.

The downside to paper fiber is that in the long run it did not prove to be as durable as other types of wicker. Also, it was not good to get it wet and would not react as well to moisture as wood. Paper fiber wicker patio sets fell out of favor in the 1940s, helped probably in part by the onset of WWII. Although it’s not produced much these days, you can still find paper fiber furniture, and original versions from the early 1900s are coveted by antique collectors.
